Transmissions
Five all-synchromesh, 16-speed range-change transmissions with different ratios are available for the Actros in conjunction with the standard single-plate dry clutch and the Telligent® gearshift, ensuring the optimal powertrain combination for every application and every topography.
The Actros transmissions ensure low engine speeds at high road speed. This has a positive effect on fuel consumption in rural and long-distance operations. The impressive climbing ability, low manoeuvring speed, durability, quiet operation and optimised power/weight ratio make the Actros transmission concept a true all-round package.
Gearshifts
The Telligent® gearshift, standard in most Actros models, meets all the requirements placed on today’s gearshift systems. The ergonomic positioning of the shift lever on a fold-up console on the driver’s seat allows effortless gear changes in any situation. This relieves the stress on drivers and enables them to concentrate on what’s happening on the road. To change up or down a gear, all the driver has to do is nudge the lever forwards or backwards, then press the clutch pedal. The gear which has been selected and – after pressing the clutch – engaged is then displayed in the instrument cluster. And the rocker switch allows the driver to split the gears, e.g. to shift just half a gear up or down.
The optional Telligent® automated gearshift or Mercedes PowerShift make changing gear even easier: the gear is automatically selected without the driver having to use the clutch – with machine-like precision and consistency. This reduces wear on the transmission and can help save fuel too.
Axles
Whatever your load, the Actros’s range of axles includes the optimum solution:
The HL6 single-reduction hypoid rear axle is fitted as standard on vehicles up to 480 hp. Its weight-optimised design contributes to lower fuel consumption. The HL6 is fitted on low-frame vehicles and now also on Lowliners. If an appropriate rear axle is specified, the vehicles can be fitted with direct-drive transmission. The single-reduction, fuel-saving HL 8 hypoid axle* caters for output ratings from 510 hp to 598 hp. Also still available as an option is the proven HL 7 planetary axle, whose high ground clearance and robust design makes it particularly suitable for construction vehicles. All axles boast an extremely robust and reliable construction, and are designed for an axle load rating of up to 13 t (optionally 16 t). The standard-fit differential lock and ASR ensure maximum traction, even under difficult conditions.
Also equipped for every task: the Actros’s durable front axles. Because of their cranked design, these axles offer a maximum body height for long-distance haulage. In construction operations, on the other hand, front axles with a straight design offer maximum ground clearance. All front axles are fitted as standard with stabilisers and shock absorbers and available with a load rating of up to 9 t.
* Not for low-frame vehicles or Lowliners
Axle load compensation
On 4-axle models the front axles feature axle load compensation. Whenever the truck drives over an obstacle, part of the weight acting on the currently more heavily loaded axle is transferred to the currently less heavily loaded axle. Axle load compensation is effective up to a difference in level of 100 mm. It may sound complicated in theory, but in practice axle load compensation translates into real, tangible benefits: reduced lateral roll, reduced wear on the axle suspension, steering and tyres and significantly enhanced ride comfort.
Mercedes Powershift
Optionally available for road vehicles, the new Mercedes PowerShift automated transmission is based on non-synchromeshed 12- or 16-speed transmissions. This allows application-oriented powertrain configurations.
Whether with 12 or 16 speeds, Mercedes PowerShift transmissions offer important advantages in terms of optimised shift times and high shifting comfort. They also have a higher torque and power capacity than comparable synchromeshed transmissions. A choice of different modes, and smoother gear changes, help to enhance safety, cost-effectiveness and comfort.
Actros Frame
The frame of the Actros offers the benefits of a robust, durable construction that is ideal for mounting bodies, minimal weight, and two other outstanding features: the innovative integral rear section on 4 x 2 and 6 x 2 semitrailer tractors, which is described in more detail in a separate section, and the intelligently designed frame head. All connections are bolted connections, making it easier – and therefore less costly – to exchange any of the parts during repair work. In addition, the weight-optimised front underride protection cuts the kerb weight. Another advantage of the Actros design is that the head lamps are positioned above the areas of the front apron which are at particularly high risk from stone chipping.
Further advantages:
- Three different side member thicknesses are available, to suit different gross vehicle weights: 7 mm, 8 mm and 9.5 mm.
- Standard frame taper and 50 mm hole spacing for precise, efficient body planning or use of standardised bodies
- Corrosion protection as a result of cathodic dip priming
- Wheelbase variants from 3300 to 6000 mm
Actros Lowliner
If your first priority when it comes to profitability is capacity rather than payload, the Actros Lowliner could be just what you’re looking for. It offers much more than a loading height of three metres – for example an application-oriented powertrain. The single-reduction HL 6 hypoid axle in conjunction with direct-drive transmissions ensures low fuel consumption.
Internal Rear
The brief was to create more flexibility for the attachment of fuel tanks or other auxiliary components, and it has produced impressive results. On air-sprung Actros semitrailer tractors this concept offers an almost completely free area on the left-hand side of the vehicle behind the cab for attaching additional components. This has been achieved by integrating the batteries and compressed air reservoirs into the area between the rear axle and the end cross member. Plus, the compressed air drier, 4-circuit safety valve and trailer control valve have been repositioned on the inside of the frame. The extra space which this has created can be used to accommodate an extra fuel tank, for example. A fuel tank capacity of up to 1200 l is possible for semitrailer tractors with a 3600-mm to 3900-mm wheelbase. Attaching hydraulic pumps or compressors is also considerably easier. As you can see, the integral rear not only offers plenty of installation space but significant advantages too.
Suspension
With its three suspension variants – air, steel/air or steel – the Actros meets every requirement you could make of a contemporary vehicle: high roll-resistance and ride stability, outstanding roadholding, discernible suspension comfort and maximum traction.
The air suspension on the Actros features air spring bellows which are positioned at the lateral extremes to reduce roll – and improve stability. The air suspension is combined as standard with Telligent® level control, which is characterised in particular by its impressive raising heights. This is particularly beneficial, for example when it comes to demountable platforms with differing ground clearances. Telligent® roll control is available as an option for chassis with full air suspension, offering automatic shock absorber control for even more comfort, safety and protection of the load in transit.
The steel-sprung Actros variants feature low-noise parabolic springs with no-maintenance rubber molecular bearings. These are quieter than conventional trapezoidal springs and up to 40% lighter. In addition all vehicles are fitted as standard with shock absorbers attuned to the tonnage plus front and rear-axle stabilisers. High-load stabilisers are available as an option. The leaf suspension is protected against corrosion by a zinc dust coating, which makes an essential contribution to the long service life of the suspension system as a whole.
2-bellows air suspension
In addition to the stabiliser link, which cuts the weight of each air-sprung rear axle by a good 90 kg, the 4 x 2 and 6 x 2 semitrailer tractors/dropsider chassis offer a further weight-reducing feature: 2-bellows air suspension. In addition to reducing the weight by approx. 30 kg and lowering the frame by 30 mm, this suspension concept also has a range of other benefits to offer. The fact that rear air-spring bellows are not required allows the shock absorbers to be positioned directly behind the axle, which brings considerable advantages in terms of handling and body roll. In addition the advantageous positioning of the spring bellows allows significantly increased raise heights and prevents the axle from distorting and affecting the angle of the cardan shaft. The lower number of bellows also means that replacing the bellows is relatively quick, saving you money in the event of a repair.
4-bellows air suspension
Vehicles with more than one driving axle are equipped with the tried-and-tested 4-bellows air suspension. For dropsiders, optional full air suspension is also available.
Stabilizer Link
With air-sprung rear axles, the stabiliser link has a dual function: it is responsible both for axle location and stabilising body roll. And that’s not all: the innovative stabiliser link replaces two control arms, two bearing brackets, two articulated rods and numerous mounting parts. The result is outstanding handling weight savings of up to 90 kg per air-sprung axle.
Steers like a car
All 2-axle and 3-axle Actros trucks are fitted as standard with hydraulic LS8 single-circuit power steering, while all 4-axle models feature a 2-circuit system. In both cases steering gear with different ratios allows powerful steering angles to be achieved with minimal force – for effortless precision manoeuvring. Weight-reduced forged and cast parts ensure tremendous steering reliability. And the oil level of the steering gear and the hydraulic system are constantly monitored by the Telligent® maintenance system – for enhanced safety.
All in all the Actros steering requires minimal effort on the part of the driver and impresses with its outstanding roadholding, precise response, optimum handling and last but not least its reliable, durable construction.
Brakes
The electronically controlled Telligent® brake system with ABS and ASR, a standard feature of every Actros model, relays braking commands at lightning speed. And Brake Assist recognises how intensely you want to brake by the speed with which you step on the brake pedal. That saves precious centimetres. 3-axle tippers are fitted with disc brakes – for optimal metering of the brake power and better resistance to fading. 4-axle tippers and all-wheel-drive vehicles are fitted with drum brakes.
Greater comfort, lower costs
Brake pad wear equalisation ensures that the pads on each axle wear at the same pace. In addition – except in the event of emergency braking – the engine brake or retarder are always included in the braking process. The advantage: the brake pads last longer. At the same time the new hill holder makes the driver’s life easier by preventing the vehicle from rolling forwards or backward unintentionally, making light work of hill starts.
Active Brake Assist
New and unrivalled: in critical situations this assistance system, optionally available in conjunction with Telligent® proximity control, can help to reduce the risk of colliding with the vehicle in front or can mitigate the consequences of an accident.
Super Wide Tyres
First things first: the optional super-wide tyres for the drive axle cut the unladen weight by up to 200 kg, as two steel wheel rims, two tyres and the spare wheel are no longer required. In the interests of optimal safety and cost-effectiveness the super-wide tyres come as standard with a tyre pressure monitoring system and an inner run-flat element which maintains directional stability in the event of a puncture. In the case of super-wide tyres on aluminium rims (only available without run-flat element) you can save up to 250 kg unladen weight. A graduated warning system in the instrument cluster keeps drivers informed if tyres are either not sufficiently inflated or are suffering a gradual loss of pressure – up to the point where a warning buzzer and stop light instruct them to stop immediately. The super-wide tyres can, of course, be regrooved, balanced and fitted with snow chains. The super-wide tyres come with a tyre pressure monitoring system, allowing routine pressure checks for the super-wide tyres to be made from the comfort of the driver’s seat.
Biodiesel package
With the optional biodiesel package for the Actros, biodiesel operation doesn't mean doing without the comfort of an auxiliary heater. So you can continue to run the vehicle on this eco-friendly, subsidised fuel even during the cold season.
Telligent® engine system
The Telligent® engine system is constantly supplied with all the relevant data such as engine speed, engine load, engine temperature, air pressures and outside temperature. It is therefore able to calculate the optimum injection period and the optimum injection point for each cylinder and for any situation on the road within a matter of milliseconds.
By providing optimum engine control, the Telligent® engine system ensures high power output, low fuel consumption and low-emission combustion. Faults are displayed automatically, enabling the driver to take the necessary action.
Telligent® level control
A remote control unit linked to the cab via a cable enables fast raising and lowering of the chassis if the vehicle has air suspension. It also saves time when swapping semitrailers or demountable bodies and allows adjustment of the vehicle height when fitting a loading ramp. In addition, the air pressure in the air bellows is adjusted in line with the load so that the chassis always remains at the same height.
Legalisation
New emissions standards
Since 1990, the European Union (EU) has been stipulating increasingly drastic reductions in emissions. Thus, the past Euro 4 norm has been replaced by Euro 5 in 2009. In addition, in 2010 a law will come into force which requires that NO2 emissions do not exceed a limit level.
New solutions
As it is now no longer possible to comply with the currently valid Euro emissions standard in an economically-efficient manner alone through further engine development, Mercedes‑Benz opted for a future-proof technology at an early stage: exhaust gas aftertreatment by means of BlueTec®, based on SCR diesel technology (Selective Catalytic Reduction). BlueTec® makes a solution available to you, with which you will not only be certain to comply with the Euro 5 exhaust gas standard, which has come into force. And even the permissible nitrogen oxide (NOx) limit is already today met by BlueTec®, and that with unbeatably low CO2 emission levels. And as far as fine particulate matter emissions are concerned, BlueTec® is also the optimum solution here, falling below the permissible limit levels. Because no other Euro 5 technology can reduce particulate matter emissions so effectively. In short: BlueTec® is convincing when it comes to fulfilling the Euro standards, and also in respect of fine particulate matter emissions. Now and in future.
Advantages
National incentives
The increasingly stringent emissions standards in the European Union are being accompanied in many European towns and cities by growing concern about fine particle emissions. As a result, some European cities are considering banning vehicles which are not designated as having low-emission status. Also under consideration are emissions-based road tolls, not just for motorways but for trunk roads, too.
BlueTec® achieves significant reductions in emissions which can thus result in toll savings and exemption from driving bans. There are other financial benefits for BlueTec® customers too: in many European countries you can expect tax breaks, and in various European municipalities BlueTec® counts in your favour when tendering for a public contract.
The advantages in everyday use
In the long-distance haulage sector, fuel consumption makes up the lion’s share of the lifecycle costs. Here, too, BlueTec® offers outstanding benefits. Further developed engines make such efficient use of the fuel that they not only have a higher output (depending on the engine variant) but also consume significantly less fuel. BlueTec® also gets top marks when it comes to service intervals: the technology is robust and requires only low maintenance. The impressive engines fitted in the new Actros deliver greater pulling power and efficiency – while offering potential fuel savings of up to 3 % in the case of straight-six engines and 6% in V8 engines
Resale advantages
Europe’s legislation is becoming increasingly standardised, so demand for commercial vehicles that meet the new Euro emissions standards can only increase. With BlueTec®, you are investing in a technology that pays for itself, even if you decide to resell several years down the line.
You can count on it: the BlueTec® calculator
The BlueTec® calculator lets you calculate the extent of the government incentives to which you are entitled. The calculation takes into account your own specific situation, including truck model, model category, payload, number of axles, registration date, countries driven in, etc. The final result shows you the government incentives you can expect based on your data.
10 good reasons for choosing Bluetec
Discover ten good reasons why the SCR technology from Mercedes‑Benz allows you to operate more efficiently – today and in the future.
1. More than 100,000 customers have already chosen it
We thank our customers for their confidence in our brand. And we can assure them that, in deciding on BlueTec®, they have chosen a technology which sets the standard, both today and in the future.
2. Most manufacturers use SCR
In the case of Euro 5, however, almost all manufacturers are currently in agreement: only SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) can enable compliance with the more stringent Euro 5 emissions standards in an economical manner. And it brings with it a whole series of benefits.
3. Payload comparable to viable competing solutions
The scope of the additional components and the extra weight associated with the technology is negligible. Essentially the only modifications required for BlueTec® are the additional tank for AdBlue and the larger silencers.
4. Optimal and clean combustion
Our experience with EGR technology is considerably higher fuel consumption due to poorer combustion. The optimised combustion process, including increased peak ignition pressures and injection pressures, enables us to achieve not only extremely low particulate emissions but also a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 6%.
5. Only BlueTec® offers long-term cost benefits
Euro 5 emissions standard came into force in 2009. In fact, now is the time to do something about it, too. Make the right decision today, and you will start enjoying the benefits sooner than you might think. Since October 2006, for example you qualify for more favourable toll charges, possible investment subsidies and you can look forward to a higher resale value for your vehicle in the longer term. And it’s worth remembering that you’ll be saving on diesel consumption with every kilometre you cover in a BlueTec® truck.
6. Service intervals are the same for BlueTec® vehicles
Long service intervals make financial sense and are also the clearest sign of up-to-date truck technology. BlueTec® ensures that you can continue to enjoy the customary long service intervals (up to 150,000 km, depending on configuration) and the associated reduced downtime.
7. BlueTec® works with all brands of oil and fuel grades
You can keep on refuelling your BlueTec® vehicle with the diesel fuel you are accustomed to. And use the same commercially available mineral oils as before. Because with BlueTec® there are absolutely no restrictions concerning diesel and oil quality. Yes, and even when using biodiesel or fuel with a high sulphur content, such as you might find outside western Europe, BlueTec® has proven itself to be a reliable technology.
8. On-board diagnostic system already fitted
BlueTec® trucks are already fitted with an On-Board Diagnostics system, which monitors the operation of all components of the BlueTec® diesel system. So you can always rest assured that your vehicle is indeed operating in compliance with Euro 5.
9. A wide range of engines is available with BlueTec®
Mercedes‑Benz has a long tradition of being early to market with innovations that offer a wealth of customer benefits. With BlueTec®, for instance, we offer two additional, new engine output categories so that you can be sure of obtaining exactly the right powerplant for any application between 120 and 600 hp.
10. AdBlue is widely available
There are currently more than 7200 points of sale throughout Europe; moreover, even outside the EU, AdBlue is available in many places . The expansion of the network of filling stations with AdBlue pumps is continuing at pace. Plus every Mercedes‑Benz truck service outlet stocks 10-litre containers. And there are cost-effective refuelling options for your depot, whatever you use your trucks for. These range from small 100-litre containers to complete, professional filling stations for larger fleets.
Distribution transplant
BlueTec® uses just four technical components to reduce nitrogen oxides, particulate emissions and consumption. These components are a modified engine, AdBlue additive, the SCR catalytic converter and On-Board Diagnostics.
Frequently asked questions
What is Euro 5?
The only difference between Euro 5 and Euro 4 is the NOx limit. The particulate limit remains the same. The NOx limit is a good 40% lower than the Euro 4 limit and 60% lower than the Euro 3 limit. Euro 5 has come into force.
Why has Daimler AG opted for BlueTec®?
- Euro 5 requirements can already be met
- Same service intervals as Euro 3, for example
- Advantages in respect of toll fees on German motorways, and other incentives
- Lower fuel consumption
Why does BlueTec® consume less fuel?
Combustion has been optimised to reduce fuel consumption and adapted to ensure low particulate emissions. AdBlue converts the nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water vapour.
What does BlueTec® technology consist of?
The four main components of the BlueTec® system are a modified engine that has been uprated (depending on variant), the AdBlue additive with its own separate tank, an SCR catalytic converter and system diagnosis.
Is the lifetime of a BlueTec® vehicle restricted?
No, in terms of both lifetime and reliability, the engines achieve the familiar high levels at the very least.
Which fuels can be used?
BlueTec® vehicles can run on all currently approved diesel fuels, including biodiesel and fuels containing sulphur
.
Is any additional maintenance required?
No. The entire BlueTec® system only has a few smaller parts subject to wear, such as the AdBlue filter, which need cleaning or replacing at the usual service intervals.
How is the functionality of the system checked?
Using the system diagnosis (On-Board Diagnosis 1 or OBD 1). A fault message is indicated on the central display and stored in the fault memory.
What is meant by on-board diagnosis?
On 1.10.2007 it became mandatory for all registered vehicles to be equipped with OBD NOx control. The on-board diagnosis system (OBD) monitors all the systems influencing the exhaust gas and is a legal requirement for trucks. If there is a malfunction the driver is informed of this by means of an indicator lamp and the event is recorded in the malfunction memory. The previous OBD 1 regulation* has been superseded by the new OBD NOx control regulation**.
* OBD 1 stipulates the monitoring of the exhaust gas aftertreatment system and other exhaust-gas-relevant systems for operational readiness.
** OBD NOx Control includes OBD 1, and there is additionally an NOx sensor which constantly monitors the exhaust gas quality in respect of the nitrogen oxides concentration. At a threshold NOx level of 7.0 g/kWh a torque limiter intervenes.
What is AdBlue?
AdBlue is a non-toxic, colourless, odourless, water-soluble substance that is used in several domains, including the agricultural, textile, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Its composition is specified in the DIN 70070 and ISO standards. AdBlue freezes at about -11 degrees Celsius, in which case it slowly becomes jelly-like and then solid.
How do BlueTec® vehicles react to low temperatures?
The entire system is heated by the engine's cooling circuit. Even when all the SCR components (AdBlue tank, pump, lines) are completely frozen, the system does not suffer any damage and becomes fully functional once more when the vehicle reaches operating temperature again. During a cold start, the NOx emission limits are initially exceeded as the catalytic converter does not become effective until the temperature exceeds 200 degrees Celsius. However this is not a problem as, even at extremely low temperatures, the required temperature is reached and AdBlue is available within a few minutes. According to the law, the emission limits must only be complied with when the engine is running at operating temperature.
How much AdBlue does a vehicle consume?
If BlueTec® is fitted, AdBlue consumption is around 4% of diesel consumption.

Instead of a co-driver's seat, this version features a comfortable armchair situated at the rear of the cab, which makes the co-driver's side of the cab unusually spacious. Comfortable seating, the upholstered cab side area with integrated reading light and the enormous amount of legroom help to make breaks, waiting times and rest periods an altogether pleasanter experience.
Drive Concept
Proven synchromesh transmissions
All five synchromesh 16-speed range-change transmissions for the Actros, with their different ratios, transfer the engine power to the road quickly and with little efficiency loss.
Change gear easily. Or automatically
Long-distance truck drivers will appreciate the modern, convenient gearshift in the Actros. Ergonomically situated, it allows effortless, comfortable shifting in all situations, so that the driver is not distracted from what's happening on the road. Even more convenience is provided by the new Mercedes PowerShift automated transmission system.
Mercedes PowerShift
As an alternative to the standard Actros transmission, Actros road vehicles can be fitted with the new optional Mercedes PowerShift automated transmission system. PowerShift offers a choice of modes including "EcoRoll" mode, which brings enormous fuel savings on long-distance trips, while the functionality of the drive and braking cruise control has been extended so that the speed interval between driving and braking modes is greater and freely selectable. When combined with an anticipatory driving style, this significantly increases comfort.
Axles – robust and reliable
The extensive axle range includes application-matched axles for long-distance haulage – for example the robust and reliable HL 6 hypoid rear axle, supplied as standard for vehicles up to 480 hp. Its weight-optimised design gives a high payload capacity and reduces fuel consumption.
Well-sprung all round
Vehicles with one driving axle are equipped with 2-bellows air suspension. This significantly improves handling and body roll, increases payload capacity by reducing weight and also allows the height of the frame to be reduced. For dropsiders, optional full-air suspension is also available.
Comfort
If you're often on the road for days or even weeks at a time, it's all the more important to have a cab that makes the arduous job of a long-distance truck driver as enjoyable as possible. The Actros is therefore equipped as standard with an air-sprung suspension seat which in conjunction with the infinitely adjustable multifunction steering wheel allows drivers to select a driving position to suit their own individual requirements.
Even more comfortable seating is provided by the optional air-conditioned suspension seat for driver and co-driver with multi-stage ventilation, which dissipates unwanted seat warmth and eliminates moisture. The user-friendly cockpit with ergonomically arranged switches makes for more relaxed, stress-free working. And with large, practical stowage facilities, some of them accessible from both inside and outside the vehicle, there are no problems keeping everything neat and tidy.
The Actros provides high standards of comfort not only for working but also, thanks to the spaciousness, for relaxing – for example it is equipped with "genuine" beds with spring-core mattress. A comfortable armchair in the Single Cab version of the L-cab provides lots of legroom and room overall, for genuinely relaxing breaks. To sum up: the Actros cab is an extremely comfortable place for both driving and relaxing.
Safety
The Actros is a model of safety: for example the new Active Brake Assist active safety system and the proven Telligent® brake system provide short stopping distances whenever required, while Telligent® proximity control automatically regulates speed and following distance. Other safety systems like Telligent® Lane Assistant and Telligent® stability control/ Telligent® roll control are virtually indispensable in long-distance haulage operation.
Cab safety includes clear-lens headlamps which are optimally aligned for extremely wide road illumination. Good visibility to the front and rear of the Actros is provided by the standard-fitted heated front-view mirror*, which gives the driver a good view of the area directly in front of the cab when sitting at the wheel, and large, heated exterior rear-view mirrors, whose heating can be switched on and off manually.
* required by law from 26.01.2007
Engines
Power, economy and long service life make the Actros engines ideal for long-distance haulage. Both the V6 and the V8 engines set standards on cost-efficiency, with low fuel consumption and high injection pressures of up to 2200 bar.
An key feature of the engines is the Telligent® engine system, an electronic engine control system which manages the injection process with millisecond speed across all driving situations. Further strengths of the Actros engines include their reliable and robust design, with long, flexible maintenance intervals.
Construction site transport
Dirt, dust, mud and gravel – welcome to the world of the Actros 20 – 41 t. A world where workers and equipment face the toughest challenges. A world where the robustness, reliability and off-road capability of an Actros are indispensable.
Safety
The safety of the Actros is based not just on successful performance in crash tests and the Swedish test but also on a whole range of features designed with your protection in mind. Inside the cab, for example, we have ensured that non-splintering, flame-resistant materials are used throughout, and all edges are smooth and rounded. And to keep things safe and secure if ever you're away from the vehicle, the Actros can also be fitted with an optional anti-theft alarm system. Another safety-related feature is the hill holder, which makes light work of hill starts.
Seeing and being seen
The Actros complies with this fundamental safety principle in many different ways. The standard-fitted clear-lens headlamps are not only handsome, they also provide excellent visibility in the dark. A headlamp wash/wipe system is optionally available. Air deflectors on the A-pillar, the exterior mirror housings and the corner panelling reduce fouling of the side windows. Good rearward visibility is provided by large mirrors including manual heated rear-view mirrors. These mirrors have a special curvature which reduces the blind spot.
Telligent®-Bremssystem: the thinking brake system
The Telligent® brake system, standard on the Actros, has advantages in all types of terrain. On construction sites the loads to which the brakes are exposed, and the most desirable brake force distribution, vary greatly depending on the current load status of the vehicle. The Telligent® brake system therefore takes the load status into account when calculating the required brake pressure at each individual wheel and so prevents overbraking and wheel lock. The brake pressure is distributed in such a way as to ensure even brake lining wear on the different axles, so that all brake linings can be replaced at the same time.

Suspension for construction vehicles
In keeping with the tough operating conditions, all vehicles are fitted with steel suspension as standard. The 6 x 4 tipper is available with an air-sprung rear axle as an option.
Engines
The V6 engines develop maximum torque of up to 2300 Nm, while the V8 units deliver up to 2800 Nm. Equipped with BlueTec®, the SCR diesel technology from Mercedes-Benz, all the engines comply with, Euro 5 engines* too are already available.
Actros engines are noted for their long service life. Our development engineers continually come up with new ways to improve this, for example by optimising the cooling system so as to reduce thermal load on the pistons.
