The Mercedes-Benz Axor Cabs

The Axor cab extends the vehicle's concept of flexibility. Choose between two spacious L-cabs for long-distance haulage – and two compact S-cabs for heavy-duty short-radius distribution.

L-cab

The L-cab (standard for all on-the-road semitrailer tractors, an option for other Axor models) is particularly well suited to longer journeys with multiple rest periods. The comfortable 68.5-cm wide standard bed is part of the standard specification.
Find out more about the L-cab

The new clear-lens headlamps with integral indicators greatly improve illumination of the road ahead, as well as giving the Axor added visual appeal. Not forgetting the fact that the bulbs of the clear-lens headlamps can be replaced in next to no time: just swing the unit out, replace the bulb and that's it! Fog lamps for the front apron are, of course, also available as an option.

The haulage cockpit is designed to make sure that long haulage trips do not turn into a test of your nerves. In keeping in line with the principle of the more storage space, the better, the protruding instrument support is used to provide extra stowage facilities. There is plenty of room for anything that drivers may require during a routine haulage trip, such as freight papers and pens, as well as personal items. This is the cockpit variant fitted as standard in all cabs.

L-cab with raised roof

The L-cab with raised roof is exceptionally spacious and offers impressive standing room. The standard lower bed is 68.5 cm wide and can be teamed with a 70-cm wide luxury upper bed, available as an option. A luggage rack can be fitted in place of the upper bunk.

S-cab

Standard for models up to 240 kW (326 hp), the Axor S-cab offers everything a driver needs for a one-day shift – particularly in heavy-duty short-radius distribution. It boasts compact dimensions, more efficient use of materials, lower weight and therefore additional payload benefits.

S-cab with rear panel

An S-cab variant with rear panel extension is available as an option for Axor models up to 240 kW (326 hp)* and provides 180 mm more room at the rear of the cab. This cab variant both enhances the driver's sense of space and offers additional stowage options.

* Standard for Axor 2536, 2540 and 2543

Axor Driveline

Nine engines (Euro 5) and several transmissions are available for the Axor. Different axles and final-drive ratios, and many combination options, offer optimal solutions for long-distance haulage and construction operations.

Transmissions

Effective power transmission calls for a transmission system tailored to the engine's power rating. The Axor comes with different transmission systems to suit a variety of application scenarios.

The 9-speed direct-drive transmissions are easy to operate and excellent in mid-to-long-distance transport and in heavy short-radius distribution because of a special gear-ratio step and their optimum tractive power transfer - enabling the engine’s power to always be transferred as directly as possible to the road.

Optionally available for Axor models from 265 kW (360 hp) upwards: manual-pneumatic 16-speed overdrive transmission in conjunction with the sturdy rear axle planetary hub reduction axle.

Regardless of the option you go for, you can be sure of economy, convenience and optimised handling.

Gearshifts

The Telligent® gearshift, standard in most Actros models, meets all the requirements placed on today’s gearshift systems. The ergonomic positioning of the shift lever on a fold-up console on the driver’s seat allows effortless gear changes in any situation. This relieves the stress on drivers and enables them to concentrate on what’s happening on the road. To change up or down a gear, all the driver has to do is nudge the lever forwards or backwards, then press the clutch pedal. The gear which has been selected and – after pressing the clutch – engaged is then displayed in the instrument cluster. And the rocker switch allows the driver to split the gears, e.g. to shift just half a gear up or down.

The optional Telligent® automated gearshift or Mercedes PowerShift make changing gear even easier: the gear is automatically selected without the driver having to use the clutch – with machine-like precision and consistency. This reduces wear on the transmission and can help save fuel too.

Axles

The Axor offers a choice of robust rear axles to suit individual transport needs and engine ratings. The right axles help keep fuel consumption, wear and tear and noise levels to a minimum.

Fewer gear wheels, less friction, less wear … trucks with a live rear axle are fitted with the single-reduction HL 6 hypoid rear axle to ensure that engine power is rapidly transmitted to the wheels – with practically no losses due to friction.

Options available for Axor trucks with a power output of 260 kW (354 hp) and above include a 16-speed overdrive transmission with mechanical/pneumatic gearshift in conjunction with the robust HL7 planetary axle. Regardless of the drive configuration you select, both are perfectly harmonised and require virtually no maintenance.

Mercedes Powershift

The new Mercedes PowerShift fully automated 12-speed gearshift system is available as an option for the Axor. Gearshifts are swifter and the transmission can transfer higher torque and more output than comparable synchronised transmissions. In addition, independently selectable programmes and smoother gearshifting contribute to enhance comfort, safety and economic efficiency depending on the specific application. For instance, in medium-duty long-distance transport, for instance, the integrated kickdown function offers important advantages: for safer slipping into the traffic flow from a filter lane, for overtaking, and on uphill gradients, the kickdown function allows the driver to rapidly obtain greater output and apply it in a targeted manner.
In heavy-duty short-radius distribution the manoeuvring mode comes to the fore. With it, it is possible to position the Axor with even greater precision and sensitivity, thus reducing the risk of damage to the vehicle or its trailer. It also makes it easier to master long accesses without space to turn around, as you can reverse out of them using the 4 reverse gears (2 of which have a faster transmission ratio). And manoeuvring becomes that much simpler thanks to the possibility to shift directly from 1st gear to R.

The Mercedes-Benz Axor Chassis

Axor Frame

The Axor parallel frame design meets two fundamental design requirements: an extremely high load-bearing capacity and not a gram of surplus weight.

Numerous measures taken to reduce the unladen weight have made it possible to achieve the objective of combining a robust design with payload benefits. As a result, the parallel frame of the new Axor can handle much more than you might think.

The frame's 50-mm hole pattern offers further advantages. It makes body attachment extremely simple, which means that bodies and add-on components such as extra fuel tanks can be fitted quickly and easily. It also eliminates the need to drill additional holes, which could damage the frame's corrosion protection. The 50-mm hole pattern thus ensures that the outstanding protective seal produced by the cathodic dip priming process remains intact.

Suspension

No matter what the application scenario, with its three suspension variants, the Axor meets all requirements of a flexible, state-of-the-art truck: excellent roll resistance and ride stability, precision roadholding, a comfortable ride and maximum traction.

For semitrailer tractors with full air suspension, the Telligent® level control system can be used to raise the frame by approx. 170 mm (approx. 200 mm for dropsiders) and lower it by 90 mm when hooking up or disconnecting. This feature comes into its own when coupling and uncoupling demountable platforms with differing ground clearances.

The Telligent® roll control system is available as an option. This automatic shock absorber control offers added comfort and safety – as well as cushioning the load during transit.

Drivers who work in demanding conditions should consider the optional cab mountings. The optimised longitudinal and rubber mounts absorb shocks and vibrations more effectively.

Suspension Link

On air-sprung rear axles, the stabiliser link has a dual function, as it is responsible both for wheel guidance and for stabilising vehicle roll. In other words, it does the work of two control arms, two bearing brackets, two articulated rods and numerous mounting parts. The end result is optimum handling as well as a reduction in weight.

Brakes

The Axor is fitted with an extremely powerful brake system as standard. The compressed-air system, including internally ventilated discs and ABS, maintains a continuously high brake pressure of 10 bar, which is on tap at all times. This translates into quick brake response times and consistently high rates of deceleration, even when the brakes are subjected to heavy usage and applied several times in succession. ABS harnesses the braking power to full effect, preventing the wheels from locking and keeping the Axor steerable, even during an emergency stop.

The optional Telligent® brake system shortens the stopping distance by a considerable margin by relaying braking commands electronically and therefore far more quickly than would ever be possible using mechanical means. The integral Brake Assist system is able to recognise a hazardous situation merely from the speed with which you step on the brake pedal. It then maximises brake power in an instant, saving vital centimetres.

The Telligent® brake system also has the edge when it comes to cost efficiency. Brake-pad-wear equalisation ensures that the pads on each axle wear down at the same rate. The wear-free brakes are also always incorporated in the braking process (apart from during an emergency stop): the Telligent® brake system calculates the required braking power and activates the constantly-open throttle and, if fitted, the retarder. This ensures that brake-pad wear is kept to a minimum. The Telligent® brake system also ensures optimum distribution of the brake force between the tractor and semitrailer, in accordance vehicle load, for even more effective braking. The range of wear-free brakes available includes a weight-optimised, powerful retarder – for Axor models with an output of 210 kW (286 hp) or above.

The Mercedes-Benz Axor Telligent® System

Telligent® engine mangement system

The Telligent® engine management system is kept constantly up to date with all relevant engine data, including engine speed, load and temperature – in addition to other variables, such as air pressure and outside temperature. This enables it to calculate the correct fuel injection duration and timing for each cylinder according to the given situation every few milliseconds.

Regulating the engine in this way, the Telligent® engine management system ensures high output, low fuel consumption and low-emission combustion. In the unlikely event of a malfunction, this will be indicated in the display, allowing the driver to react accordingly.

Telligent® Brake System

The optional Telligent® brake system comprises a controlled dual-circuit brake system with 10 bar operating pressure, all-round air disc brakes, ABS, ASR, and the engine brake. This can be supplemented by a weight-optimised, powerful retarder (for Axor models from 210 kW (286 hp)). The Telligent® brake system relays each brake signal with lightning speed – far quicker than any mechanical system. It also allows brake power to be metered as sensitively as in a passenger car.

The integral Brake Assist system immediately recognises a critical situation from the speed with which the brake pedal is applied and responds instantly by deploying the maximum braking effect.

The integral retarder function is a particularly economical feature. Each time the service brake is applied, the engine brake (constantly-open throttle and brake valve) and, where fitted, the retarder* are incorporated in the braking sequence. This serves to minimise brake-pad wear.

The Telligent® brake system is also capable of automatically distributing the brake force between tractor and semitrailer more effectively and in accordance with the correct vehicle load. Brake-pad-wear equalisation ensures that the pads on each axle wear down at the same rate and can be replaced at the same time.

* From 210 kW (286 hp)

Telligent® level control

Telligent® self-levelling suspension makes up part of the standard specification on air-sprung Axor models. A remote control that is connected to the cab by means of a cable can be used to quickly raise the frame by around 170 mm or to lower it by as much as 90 mm. This saves valuable time when swapping semi-trailers or swop bodies, as well as allowing the vehicle height to be varied to suit any loading bay. The system also adapts the air pressure in the air bags to the current vehicle load, meaning that the frame always remains at a constant height.

Telligent® roll control

Rigid trucks up to 240 kW (326 hp) with full air suspension can be ordered with the optional Telligent®-roll control. By regulating the shock absorbers electronically, damping characteristics can be adapted constantly to reflect the current driving situation, vehicle load and the condition of the road surface. In short, instead of the shock absorbers having a fixed setting, damping characteristics are flexible. This leads to added comfort and safety, as well as cushioning the load during transit.

Telligent® maintenance system

Service intervals for long-distance-haulage applications are set at 100,000 kilometres. The Telligent® maintenance system (fitted as standard on Axor models up to 240 kW/326 hp, otherwise optional) opens up the possibility of individual service intervals of as much as 120,000 kilometres, by taking the actual vehicle load as its guideline. Being able to do this involves registering every single cold start, for example. The condition of the engine oil together with all major assembly oils is checked constantly, as is the coolant level. The system indicates when the air cleaner or fuel filter require replacement, as well as displaying the degree of brake pad wear. This allows maximum use to be made of all fuels and lubricants. Servicing can also be scheduled in advance and timed to coincide with the inspections prescribed by law, for example, to avoid additional vehicle downtime.

Any faults are stored by the Telligent® maintenance system, although it will only notify the driver if action needs to be taken. Less serious faults or temporary malfunctions will be read out during the next routine visit to the workshop. This keeps time-consuming troubleshooting – often the most costly part of the repair process – to a minimum.

This maintenance system makes things as simple as possible for the driver: basically, if no flashing lights appear, then that is the all-clear to set off. In other words, apart from checking tyre pressures, the entire daily vehicle inspection can be conducted from the comfort of the driver's seat. Something which saves precious time, each and every morning.

Telligent® engine system

The Telligent® engine system is kept constantly up-to-date with all relevant data, such as engine speed, engine load and engine temperature, in addition to other variables, such as air pressure and ambient temperature. This enables it to recalculate correct injection quantity, duration and timing for each cylinder and for any driving situation every few milliseconds. By regulating the engine in this way, the Telligent® engine system is able to achieve high power output, low fuel consumption and low-emission combustion.

In the unlikely event of a malfunction, not only will it be shown in the display, but the ECU will switch to 'Emergency mode' permitting the driver to react accordingly and drive to a place of safety.

Telligent® gearshift & Telligent® automated (AutoTrans) gearshift

The Telligent® gearshift available as an option for all Axor models from 205 kW (279 hp) upwards fits the bill for a state-of-the-art gearshift in every possible respect: when drivers want to shift up or down, they merely have to nudge the shift lever forwards or backwards. The Telligent® gearshift then instantly computes the gear best suited to the current torque and engine speed, with the aim of maintaining fuel consumption at the most favourable level. The pre-selected gear is flashed up in the display. If the driver is satisfied with the selection, all that remains to do is depress the clutch pedal. Nevertheless, the driver always has the final say: if a different gear seems to be a better choice than that suggested, when driving uphill or on a winding section of road, for instance, the gear selection can be altered manually. The rocker switch control makes for convenient splitting of the gears, which is handy when drivers only want to shift up or down by a single gear ratio. Furthermore, the possibility of over-revving or gearshift errors is completely excluded thanks to the Telligent® gearshift.

Also on the option list for the 170-kW (231-hp) model is the Telligent® automated (AutoTrans) gearshift which relieves the strain on drivers without relieving them of ultimate control. This is due to the fact that, on the one hand, gear changes are made without the driver even having to operate the clutch, taking all of the hard work out of hill starts, manoeuvring in tight yards or reversing, whilst, on the other hand, the driver is still free to take control of gear selection at any time. The precise gearshift is not just kind to the gearbox; it is by no means unheard of for drivers to cut their fuel consumption courtesy of the Telligent® automated (AutoTrans) gearshift.

Telligent® trailing axle

The Telligent® trailing axle, which is available to order for rigid trucks, tightens the turning circle by up to 2 metres. Also in its favour are its improved steering comfort and manoeuvrability. Here is a brief description of the technology behind the axle: a steering angle sensor positioned in the vicinity of the front axle registers the angle that the front wheels are turned to. An electronically controlled multi-axle steering unit then transfers the same turning angle to the Telligent® trailing axle's wheels. At speeds in excess of 45 km/h the trailing axle is no longer steered, instead it is automatically centred and locked into position by a hydraulic mechanism. One of the trailing axle's other in-built features, its raisable design, comes into play on longer journeys, when it can save fuel and reduce tyre wear if the vehicle is unladen or only partially laden, for example.

The Mercedes-Benz Axor Bluetec 5

Legalisation

New emissions standards
Since 1990, the European Union (EU) has been stipulating increasingly drastic reductions in emissions. the past Euro 4 norm has been replaced by Euro 5 in 2009. In addition, in 2010 a law will come into force which requires that NO2 emissions do not exceed a limit level.

New solutions
As it is now no longer possible to comply with the currently valid Euro emissions standard in an economically-efficient manner alone through further engine development, Mercedes‑Benz opted for a future-proof technology at an early stage: exhaust gas aftertreatment by means of BlueTec®, based on SCR diesel technology (Selective Catalytic Reduction). BlueTec® makes a solution available to you, with which you will not only be certain to comply with the Euro 5 exhaust gas standard, which came into force in 2009. And even the permissible nitrogen oxide (NOx) limit is already today met by BlueTec®, and that with unbeatably low CO2 emission levels. And as far as fine particulate matter emissions are concerned, BlueTec® is also the optimum solution here, falling below the permissible limit levels. Because no other Euro 5 technology can reduce particulate matter emissions so effectively. In short: BlueTec® is convincing when it comes to fulfilling the Euro standards, and also in respect of fine particulate matter emissions. Now and in future.

Advantages

National incentives
The increasingly stringent emissions standards in the European Union are being accompanied in many European towns and cities by growing concern about fine particle emissions. As a result, some European cities are considering banning vehicles which are not designated as having low-emission status. Also under consideration are emissions-based road tolls, not just for motorways but for trunk roads, too.

BlueTec® achieves significant reductions in emissions which can thus result in toll savings and exemption from driving bans. There are other financial benefits for BlueTec® customers too: in many European countries you can expect tax breaks, and in various European municipalities BlueTec® counts in your favour when tendering for a public contract.

The advantages in everyday use
In the long-distance haulage sector, fuel consumption makes up the lion’s share of the lifecycle costs. Here, too, BlueTec® offers outstanding benefits. Further developed engines make such efficient use of the fuel that they not only have a higher output (depending on the engine variant) but also consume significantly less fuel. BlueTec® also gets top marks when it comes to service intervals: the technology is robust and requires only low maintenance. The impressive engines fitted in the new Actros deliver greater pulling power and efficiency – while offering potential fuel savings of up to 3 % in the case of straight-six engines and 6% in V8 engines

Resale advantages
Europe’s legislation is becoming increasingly standardised, so demand for commercial vehicles that meet the new Euro emissions standards can only increase. With BlueTec®, you are investing in a technology that pays for itself, even if you decide to resell several years down the line.

You can count on it: the BlueTec® calculator
The BlueTec® calculator lets you calculate the extent of the government incentives to which you are entitled. The calculation takes into account your own specific situation, including truck model, model category, payload, number of axles, registration date, countries driven in, etc. The final result shows you the government incentives you can expect based on your data.

10 good reasons for choosing Bluetec

Discover ten good reasons why the SCR technology from Mercedes‑Benz allows you to operate more efficiently – today and in the future.

1. More than 100,000 customers have already chosen it
We thank our customers for their confidence in our brand. And we can assure them that, in deciding on BlueTec®, they have chosen a technology which sets the standard, both today and in the future.

2. Most manufacturers use SCR
In the case of Euro 5, however, almost all manufacturers are currently in agreement: only SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) can enable compliance with the more stringent Euro 5 emissions standards in an economical manner. And it brings with it a whole series of benefits.

3. Payload comparable to viable competing solutions
The scope of the additional components and the extra weight associated with the technology is negligible. Essentially the only modifications required for BlueTec® are the additional tank for AdBlue and the larger silencers.

4. Optimal and clean combustion
Our experience with EGR technology is considerably higher fuel consumption due to poorer combustion. The optimised combustion process, including increased peak ignition pressures and injection pressures, enables us to achieve not only extremely low particulate emissions but also a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 6%.

5. Only BlueTec® offers long-term cost benefits
Euro 5 emissions standard came into force in 2009. In fact, now is the time to do something about it, too. Make the right decision today, and you will start enjoying the benefits sooner than you might think. Since October 2006, for example you qualify for more favourable toll charges, possible investment subsidies and you can look forward to a higher resale value for your vehicle in the longer term. And it’s worth remembering that you’ll be saving on diesel consumption with every kilometre you cover in a BlueTec® truck.

6. Service intervals are the same for BlueTec® vehicles
Long service intervals make financial sense and are also the clearest sign of up-to-date truck technology. BlueTec® ensures that you can continue to enjoy the customary long service intervals (up to 150,000 km, depending on configuration) and the associated reduced downtime.

7. BlueTec® works with all brands of oil and fuel grades
You can keep on refuelling your BlueTec® vehicle with the diesel fuel you are accustomed to. And use the same commercially available mineral oils as before. Because with BlueTec® there are absolutely no restrictions concerning diesel and oil quality. Yes, and even when using biodiesel or fuel with a high sulphur content, such as you might find outside western Europe, BlueTec® has proven itself to be a reliable technology.

8. On-board diagnostic system already fitted
BlueTec® trucks are already fitted with an On-Board Diagnostics system, which monitors the operation of all components of the BlueTec® diesel system. So you can always rest assured that your vehicle is indeed operating in compliance with Euro 5.

9. A wide range of engines is available with BlueTec®
Mercedes‑Benz has a long tradition of being early to market with innovations that offer a wealth of customer benefits. With BlueTec®, for instance, we offer two additional, new engine output categories so that you can be sure of obtaining exactly the right powerplant for any application between 120 and 600 hp.

10. AdBlue is widely available
There are currently more than 7200 points of sale throughout Europe; moreover, even outside the EU, AdBlue is available in many places . The expansion of the network of filling stations with AdBlue pumps is continuing at pace. Plus every Mercedes‑Benz truck service outlet stocks 10-litre containers. And there are cost-effective refuelling options for your depot, whatever you use your trucks for. These range from small 100-litre containers to complete, professional filling stations for larger fleets.

Distribution transplant

BlueTec® uses just four technical components to reduce nitrogen oxides, particulate emissions and consumption. These components are a modified engine, AdBlue additive, the SCR catalytic converter and On-Board Diagnostics.

Frequently asked questions

What is Euro 5?
The only difference between Euro 5 and Euro 4 is the NOx limit. The particulate limit remains the same. The NOx limit is a good 40% lower than the Euro 4 limit and 60% lower than the Euro 3 limit. Euro 5 comes into force in October 2009.

Why has Daimler AG opted for BlueTec®?
- Euro 5 requirements can already be met
- Same service intervals as Euro 3, for example
- Advantages in respect of toll fees on German motorways, and other incentives
- Lower fuel consumption

Why does BlueTec® consume less fuel?
Combustion has been optimised to reduce fuel consumption and adapted to ensure low particulate emissions. AdBlue converts the nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water vapour.

What does BlueTec® technology consist of?
The four main components of the BlueTec® system are a modified engine that has been uprated (depending on variant), the AdBlue additive with its own separate tank, an SCR catalytic converter and system diagnosis.

Is the lifetime of a BlueTec® vehicle restricted?
No, in terms of both lifetime and reliability, the engines achieve the familiar high levels at the very least.

Which fuels can be used?
BlueTec® vehicles can run on all currently approved diesel fuels, including biodiesel and fuels containing sulphur .

Is any additional maintenance required?
No. The entire BlueTec® system only has a few smaller parts subject to wear, such as the AdBlue filter, which need cleaning or replacing at the usual service intervals.

How is the functionality of the system checked?
Using the system diagnosis (On-Board Diagnosis 1 or OBD 1). A fault message is indicated on the central display and stored in the fault memory.

What is meant by on-board diagnosis?
On 1.10.2007 it became mandatory for all registered vehicles to be equipped with OBD NOx control. The on-board diagnosis system (OBD) monitors all the systems influencing the exhaust gas and is a legal requirement for trucks. If there is a malfunction the driver is informed of this by means of an indicator lamp and the event is recorded in the malfunction memory. The previous OBD 1 regulation* has been superseded by the new OBD NOx control regulation**.

* OBD 1 stipulates the monitoring of the exhaust gas aftertreatment system and other exhaust-gas-relevant systems for operational readiness.

** OBD NOx Control includes OBD 1, and there is additionally an NOx sensor which constantly monitors the exhaust gas quality in respect of the nitrogen oxides concentration. At a threshold NOx level of 7.0 g/kWh a torque limiter intervenes.

What is AdBlue?
AdBlue is a non-toxic, colourless, odourless, water-soluble substance that is used in several domains, including the agricultural, textile, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Its composition is specified in the DIN 70070 and ISO standards. AdBlue freezes at about -11 degrees Celsius, in which case it slowly becomes jelly-like and then solid.

How do BlueTec® vehicles react to low temperatures?
The entire system is heated by the engine's cooling circuit. Even when all the SCR components (AdBlue tank, pump, lines) are completely frozen, the system does not suffer any damage and becomes fully functional once more when the vehicle reaches operating temperature again. During a cold start, the NOx emission limits are initially exceeded as the catalytic converter does not become effective until the temperature exceeds 200 degrees Celsius. However this is not a problem as, even at extremely low temperatures, the required temperature is reached and AdBlue is available within a few minutes. According to the law, the emission limits must only be complied with when the engine is running at operating temperature.

How much AdBlue does a vehicle consume?
If BlueTec® is fitted, AdBlue consumption is around 4% of diesel consumption.
